so busy and yet...

You ever have those times in life where you feel like you're extremely busy, always on the go, and whatever and yet when you try to quantify your time and, I guess, budget it, you have no idea where it all goes? That's where I am now. I've had some time (I've made it through the first three discs of the first season of Lost so far this week -- eight hours worth), but it still feels like I have no free time. It's weird...and yet there's no paycheck involved.

the stuff people sell

Some of you may have noticed the google ads that are at the bottom of this and every page on this site (and on the right side there -->) but very few of you have clicked them (I know because I'm losing money on keeping this site up). In any case, I make a point of clicking interesting ones from time to time, just to make a few cents here and there.

In any case, I clicked one yesterday and came to this site which states "Imagine a program that would FREE you from smoking or weight once and for all! We offer you all of the life changes and YOUR FREEDOM!". The snarky response to this first line of the page is "you can cure me of wieght? Does this mean space flight?" But then I realize tat thats kind of lame. Then I wonder where the hell the broken English that permeates this site comes from, the clinic being located in very English speaking Windsor, Canada (across the border from Detroit). Then I come around to wondering how many people are in the business without any clue of how they represent themselves makes them look. English is a given, even someone with no skillz can tell when something's the tiniest bit askew. The journey of thought ends, however, when I think of how so many of the excellent writers and editors I know can't find a job...and how ironic it is that so many people out there really, really, need to hire editors.

Oh well, c'est la vie.

a baby would make three

Yesterday was very interesting to those that may have been paying attention around these parts...It officially became Fall at 6:23pm yesterday, which coincided almost perfectly with the rush of cooler air pressing in after a line of cold-front thunderstorms. That push of cool autumnal air followed a morning of humid, summer-like thunderstorms...a last hit of Summer weather I suppose (after a month and a half of almost no rain).

In any case, I couldn't help but notice the timing of everything...like for once mother nature and father time are in sync with one another

a-wonderin'

New Orleans couldn't be evacuated in time and Houston is having huge problems doing so, even with the benefit of a couple extra days. Both had gridlock stretching out hundreds of miles inland...it makes me wonder if it would be any better if there were some decent public transportation sysetems in place...inter-city trains or something...more like Europe. Trains could be borrowed and a thousand people moved in several train cars versus a couple hundred cars -- on dedicated tracks with ease to make return trips as many times as is necessary. It seems that it would be better, more efficient, and hella easier to coordinate.

I know I harp on cars a lot (because somebody has to), but I really can't help but feel that they are making matters worse along the coast right now...and would in just about any other emergency situation in a major population center.

a comment on comments

No one's commented in awhile so I took the opportunity to switch over to Blogger's comment system, which is nicer for me (because people keep commenting on posts from forever ago and I have no idea of knowing what they're commenting on). So anyway, comment away...

skool sux

I just raced through reading two research journal articles, summarizing them, and "applying them to class discussion" (whatever the hell that means) in a little over two and half hours. I'm beat. I want to go home...but now I have to gain more knowledge in class. ugh.

i don't know

I haven't been in the mood to write much lately. Scratch that, when I have been wanting to write, it's been while at home where for some unknown reason Blogger doesn't want to connect through my very limited WiFi signal. So I don't do it. Perhaps I should write stuff on my offline time and upload later, but that doesn't really do much for me either...most of what I want to say, I want to say when I say it...not sometime afterward. It doesn't do anything for me.

In any case, I've quit smoking (again). I'm sick of the achy lung thing. Even though I've saved most of my smoking as a side-dish to drinking...you still feel the need to smoke on your off days to kepe the nichotine levels up there. I'm going to be grouchy, I'm going to be bitchy, and I'm probably going to give into the temptation at least a couple times in the coming week or so...but I'm hoping this is the last time I quit.

beware the birds

I've been reading and hearing alot about the avian bird flu that seems to be ready to make the leap to human in SE Asia...the flu that the World Health Organization believes is going to be the next pandemic, killing millions (maybe a billion) worldwide, and destroying the economy (and, of course, the US government isn't ready for it). I'm kinda freaked out...there's only so much that can be done about it aside from crossing one's fingers and trusting that the authorities can do something about it before it spreads too far.

Anyway, I don't really have much to say about it (except that I'm going to order some quality face masks in the next week or so...just in case), I just want to let everyone know what's hanging out there on the horizon. I know I'm not one to pay any attention to the terrorist "threat"...but the dire consequences of this natural possiblity, coupled with the government's hush-hush attitude towards it, worries me. It doesn't hurt to be prepared with some face masks, that alochol hand stuff, and a month or two worth of canned food (especially considering that it's about time for Meijer's stock-up sale for those of you in the MidWest).

for a little trip planning

I put a travelocity flight finder on the bottom of this page. You can look up flights to wherever and if you are going somewhere, you can help me pay the bills for this site.

fastest job ever

So I don't have a lot of money to throw at the Hurricane relief effort, but I do want to help and have a lot of time, so I thought I'd donate that to the Red Cross...

I wrote my local chapter at about 4:30 today, saying I wanted to help. About ten minutes later my phone rings and it's the woman in charge of that sort of thing and she offers me a position helping other people register for volunteer classes...I start tomorrow at 8:30 in the morning. How about that for turn around?

I guess the lesson here is that the Red Cross is in dire need of help and if you have any time, please give them or some other agency a call. Or money...if you got that, send it to them.
